Locals Share Cultural Meaning of Festivals Around the World

A festival is a recurring celebration of a significant occasion, usually one that is religious or cultural, that is characterized by ceremonies, food, and public gatherings. It may also be a planned sequence of cultural activities with a particular subject. Festivals unite people to celebrate a common identity, strengthening ties among the community and fostering pride.

One approach to integrate into a community is through festivals. Festivals, whether religious or seasonal, solemn or lighthearted, formal or informal, signify an event that holds significance for the people who celebrate it.  Festivals, which frequently include diverse and vibrant costumes, music, dance, pageantry, and cuisine, offer a glimpse into the common customs, history, and values that a particular community celebrates.

Festivals are a kind of social practice, according to UNESCO. A group or society's shared customs, routines, and activities are known as social practices.

Festivals generally share certain characteristics:

  • Festivals are social events that bring people together to celebrate.
  • Whether it's a religious celebration, a kind of music, or a cultural custom, festivals frequently have a main subject.
  • Festivals are usually held once a year and are frequently repeated events. They are used to indicate the passing of time and are frequently connected to significant occurrences such as seasons, life stages, or agricultural cycles.
  • They have a schedule of events that might include a variety of things, such as art installations, food vendors, and performances.

Festivals are classified by UNESCO as manifestations of cultural heritage, falling under the categories of social customs, rituals, and joyous occasions. They are part of the legacy inherited from past generations.
