  1. Very interesting article. I can remember visiting San Miguel and the Terra Nostra Gardens in 1960. My father was a private contractor working at Lajes Air Force Base on Terceira in 1958 -1960. I was in 6th grade and my brother was in 11th grade. We traveled over to San Miguel to tour the island. I remember the water coming out of the pipe to the pool clear and quickly turning brown as soon as the iron in the water oxidized.
    Great memories, I need to get back for a vacation.
