What is Archaeology? Archaeologists Share Their Expertise

What is Archaeology? Ask the Experts!

What is archaeology? The short answer is that archaeology is the study of human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artifacts and other physical remains.

Archaeologists are trained professionals who unearth information about the lives of people who existed hundreds, thousands, and even millions of years before us.

These real-life "Indiana Joneses" learn about the communities and societies they have studied through examining ancient structures; manuscripts, sculptures, and paintings; tools; food remnants, cooking utensils, and storage receptacles; clothing; and human remains themselves.

Archaeologists connect the dots between specific sites and their surroundings, the material evidence they uncover, and what is known about the period of history during which the site was populated.

Archaeology relates to cultural identity by providing physical evidence of the past that shapes theories about ancient beliefs, social structures, and daily life. These conclusions can be used to build a sense of shared history and national identity. At the same time, archaeologists recognize that identity is complex, influenced by factors like trade, migration, and interaction between groups, and can change over time.

Despite its focus on the past, archaeology brings to life themes as relevant today as they were several millennia ago: identity, sense of place, community, ritual, power, awe, and connection.
